the premier hub and policy lab
The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs develops evidence-based research to help address the world's most challenging energy and climate problems through research, education, and dialogue.
overview
We developed a modern and clean visual identity and a multipurpose website that reflects the organization's innovative spirit while retaining elements of tradition. The website design emphasized content organization, filtering, readability, and calls to action. The resulting website improved the user experience, highlighted initiatives, programs, and thought leadership, and aligned with the client's goals and values.
research & discovery
To ensure a human-centered design approach, we conducted thorough research to understand the audience and the client's values. We analyzed website analytics and created user personas to identify the user's pain points and motivations. We also examined the competition and industry to identify opportunities for differentiation. The insights gathered helped us develop a design strategy that would bridge the gap between people's needs and business goals. This process helped us align our design decisions with the client's goals and ensure the website met the needs of its users.
website design
Our user-centered design approach was critical in developing a website that improved the user experience and aligned with CGEP's values and goals.
powerful search
Based on the user research conducted in the discovery phase, we organized the content around topics, regions, and types of work. We created a filtering system that allowed users to easily navigate and find the content they were looking for.
To highlight initiatives and programs, we designed dedicated landing pages with clear calls to action, as well as pages promoting their podcast channels and a blog page that emphasized their content.
Overall, the website redesign improved the user experience, making it easier for users to find the content they need, and emphasized CGEP's initiatives and programs.
Branding
Our branding approach was grounded in the mission and values of the Center on Global Energy Policy and Columbia University. We conducted a visual audit of the existing brand and analyzed the competition to identify areas of differentiation. We then created mood boards and sketches to explore different directions for the visual identity. Through an iterative process, we arrived at a modern and clean visual identity that reflects the organization's innovative spirit while retaining elements of tradition to align with the university's values.
